Yoga Therapy - An invaluable support for people with illness
Yoga is commonly misunderstood to predominantly be the practice of physical postures and as a result of this belief, the benefits of yoga for people with illness and reduced mobility are greatly overlooked.
In truth yoga is about re-connecting back to ourselves. It is therefore an incredible tool that supports us through the whole of our lives and one that can offer invaluable support especially during times of illness.
What exactly does 're-connecting back to ourselves' mean? Well it means 'being with ourselves' rather than outside of ourselves. Being able to feel what's going on with our emotions as well as in our bodies. And although for many people the prospect of feeling what's going on for them sounds daunting, in practice it is always far less painful than the state of avoidance that many of us seek to stay in.
What benefits does connection to self bring? Well, when we know how we are feeling and what's going on in our bodies, we naturally make choices that take into account how we feel. So in effect what we are learning to do is to take ourselves into consideration. Making more considerate choices on behalf of ourselves leads to a greater feeling of self care and we get to realise that although we may need to rely on others to help us when we are unwell, if we are able to direct them as to what would truly support us in any given moment, then we get to feel incredibly nurtured and cared for and that that care originates from us.
What do yoga sessions look like? Ok so each yoga session is designed specifically for each individual person and of course it's solely dependant on their specific needs and abilities. Sessions range from being purely bed based, with very little movement at all, to sessions that are very active and contain lots of strengthening work. The thread that binds them all together is that they are all designed to support a person to re-connect back to the truth of who they are.
